Lend Me a Tenor takes us to 1934, when the Cleveland Grand Opera Company has invited the world-renowned Italian tenor Tito Merelli to star for one night only in Verdi’s Otello. The star arrives late and, through an uproarious series of mishaps, is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out, thrusting a fledgling opera singer, Max, into the limelight. The show must go on! So Max, who is also the opera manager’s assistant, is forced to impersonate the great “Il Stupendo,” in full costume and makeup. Various women in the show think Max is Tito and try to make themselves available – the result is a three-ring circus of mistaken identities, improbable liaisons and door-slamming hilarity that have made Lend Me a Tenor one of the most durable and perennially popular comedies of the last quarter-century.
In Good Company’s production, Max is portrayed by TERRY LEWIS with the opera star Tito Merelli played by PADDY MYERS. Other cast members include CHRISTINE MYERS as Marie Merelli, Tito’s wife, CRYSTAL BACKOFF as Maggie, Max’s fiancé, ADRIAN LOPEZ as Saunders, the producer, JESSICA KNOTTS as Diana, the wanton local operatic hopeful, PATRICIA HOFFMAN as Julia, Chairman of the Cleveland Opera Guild, and MIGUEL MOLINAR as the opera-loving Bellhop who is dying to get Il Stupendo’s photo and autograph.
Direction of Lend Me a Tenor is by GCP performing veteran ROBERT SANCHEZ, with musical direction and dialect coaching by TERRY LEWIS.
