20 for Seven
Great Show. Great Live

Vera Jones - Jan 03, 2006

So I went to the Pines Bar on New Year's Eve.  It was last minute. I had originally planned on getting a little buzz and being in bed by eleven.  I felt this was safer than going out for New Year's Eve, as I just wasn't feeling it.  I have never liked New Year's Eve, because it always seems so anticlimactic.

Anyways I figured there would be a live band, but I had no idea who it would be.  Turned out it was band called 20 for Seven.  Now, they only did covers, but I figured this was because it was New Year's Eve and people aren't going to play 20 bucks for original tunes they've never heard of before - even if they are good.  Usually they want live music that they can dance to and are familiar with.  I feel the same way.

But I discovered they aren't just a cover band, they have their very own music - seems like lots of cover bands don't.  One thing I could tell was that they were good musicians, technically.  And they did put on a heck of a show - super fun.  Lots of Energy.  It also is really cool, when the leader singer can actually sing.  I think it's easier to sound good doing your own music, then doing someone else's perfectly- which 20 for Seven did.

One of my friends was stoked enough to pick up there CD, and curious, I borrowed it.
I have mixed feeling about it, though over all it was pretty good.  They have a sort of Three Doors Down/ Collective Soul/bluesy/alt rock type sound, so if that's a sound you like you'll be all over these guys.  I talked to some guy at the Pines who had seen them at the Crossroads, where they performed their own music and he said they were awesome.  So apparently they are one of those bands who seem to shine on stage, while there recorded music seems less inspiring, at least initially.  After two solid listen throughs, I was liking it better. Their songs "Forget why" and "Slither" are pretty awesome and the melody on "Last Nerve" is something I could listen to over and over.

I would definitely go seem them again, so I could hear their own stuff live.  By the way, this New Year's Eve turned out good.  I had a blast and no hangover the next day.  It doesn't get better than that.

For more info on 20 for Seven go to their website.   They are also playing on the sixth of this month at the Pines Resort again.
