We were just going to leave, but then the band started playing and I was like "dang, I shouldn't miss this." I wandered towards the stage, because I have alway been interested in bass and the first thing I noticed, was how good their bass player was. I got closer to the stage to check him out. The guy was going off. I watched him play for a good five minutes and then I noticed the drummer - how young he was, and how much technical skill he obviously had. Anyways, it was then that I started listening to the music as a whole (I have tendency to focus on certain parts of the music before really listening to all of it) and was just taken aback out how dope these guys really were. I was surprised that such a good band was in such a small venue - but goody for me and the rest of the audience. I had the impression from the way they played that they had been together for awhile. And I figured they were christians, as that was the kind venue that we were in and they didn't say anything skanky while on stage. But it wasn't like gospel music or anything (on their album they do have a song about their relationship with God, but it is not the focus of the album - they aren't a christian group, but three guys, whom God is important to and they have a band - at least that's how I took it.) They played a really short set, though. The talent of the band was obvious and it was cool because I couldn't really place them as they were all over the place musically. I arranged for an interview, which took forever, because they literally talked to every person that came to the show, taking pictures with them and signing CDs. I met with Gary and Andrew to discuss their new album "Worth the Weight". [Blank Logic is Gary price (guitar), Anthony Gonzalez (bass), Jordan Smallwood (drums)] and I was totally stoked to be doing the interview because I had listened to their CD for a week straight, and there was a lot on the album I wanted to discuss. The cool thing is that every track on their new CD is good. Nothing is worse than being all hyped on a song ,then you buy the album and if you're lucky there'll be two more good songs mixed in with mostly crap. "Worth the Weight" is just the opposite of that. They experiment with different sounds and styles on each of the tracks, and the more you listen to the CD the more a lot of the songs grow on you. I kept playing it over and over. (Blank Logic performing at the Warped Tour) What's interesting about the album is that every song sounds pretty different. They don't really stay inside one genre. If I had to pin them...well I can't, althought they did remind me of certain bands, like MXPX, or No Use for a Name, but that was only maybe two tracks. I mentioned this to them and asked how they would classify themselves. They told me they had a title for their type of music, but it was completely Top Secret and they wouldn't reveal it. They had come up with a name that's original, but didn't want to bust it unless they got signed. I tried to wheedle it out of them, but they wouldn't budge. "See, and what you're going to call us is the name that I wrote for it, and then other bands will steal it." "So it's a completely original title?" "yeah, but if you heard you'd be like - that's exactly it. That's what they are. If we don't ever make it, the title is going to die with us." (I'm pretty sure they were joking but who knows...) Price's skill as a songwriter is evident as he talks about love, insecurity, jealousy, his relationship with God, his son, and his love for his wife. They don't sound like Radiohead, but Price possesses the same sort of skill, in that when you are listening you feel the song is about you, because you can completely identify with the feelings expressed. "The most important thing I want to get across in this interview is that we are the band that actually cares about everybody. I don't know if you could tell or not that night at the show, but we hung out with every person at the concert." Which was true. "I hug every single person... even on MySpace, people aren't sure if they want to be your friend. but now we have like 9000 friends." "People are addicted to MySpace." "Yeah it's like internet crack - when I say we have 9000 friends, I mean so many bands just want numbers so they just add everyone, but we actually want to know our fans. We have like 3200 comments on our site and I have replied to everyone of them, every comment. every E-mail." "Isn't that time consuming?" "Yeah , but it's worth it, like the show you went to was kind of small, but I saw like 15 kids singing along to every song and they all want to take a picture and hug us and they actually feel like they know us and we feel the same way back. It's cause they know we're not all about being famous. I like music and all and I like performing, but my favorite thing is hanging out with people. I know how bands can take advantage of people, or just be out for the fame. I alway said if we made it, we would alway try to make people's day. And it's so cool to get e-mail from people in other countries. We're like, how did they even hear of us? We're always going into debt 'cause we will just give our CDs away and we will be kicking ourselves, and then we'll get an e-mail from some kid from Australia who says, 'I can't believe how nice you are and how cool,' and hearing stuff like that just makes us want to do it all over again." Talking to the guys you can just tell they are genuine. I would be really surprised if they didn't make it. All of the guys are very talented, Anthony's skills as a bassist are top notch, Jordan kicks, and Gary has the voice, the charisma, and he's completely hot - these are key in a frontman.
