Wine Varieties and Selections

Red Wine
These Cabernet, Zinfanbel, Malbec and Merlot selections range in flavour and fullness.  Choose from some of Wine Spectator's top 100 like the South American 2002.

Reserva Malbec 2002

Colour: intense red with blue shades.
Aroma: powerful and complex. Notes of red fruit can be perceived such as raspberry, red currant and sweet plum. Further hints of vanilla and caramel, stemming from its ageing in oak barrels, add a new level of complexity to this already full and exciting aroma.
Taste: a wine with a magnificent structure that offers a sensational mouth -feel and an intensely rich flavour. Its beautifully integrated tannins make it lively and strong. Its finish is smooth and perfectly harmonious.

Merlots
The Merlot grapes are primarily grown in California and France.  Known for their diversity, the merlot wines offer something for everyone.

Chardonnays and Whites
Chardonnay is to white wine what Cabernet is to reds. It is used to produce France's magnificent white Burgundies and is the main grape in Champagne. But Chardonnay also has a populist bent - in the last decade or so, it has become the world's most often-purchased dry white wine. Indeed, because of its great adaptability, it grows in nearly every wine-producing area of the world; some California Chardonnays are stellar examples of the genre.

When Chardonnay wines are made with care, they are bold, rich and complex and taste of ripe figs and peach, honey and butter, hazelnuts and spice. The best are medium-bodied, medium dry and high in acidity. Chardonnays, more than any other white wine, love to be aged in oak.

Cabernets
A powerful grape famous as one of the main varieties, along with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and others used to create the magnificent french Bordeaux region blended red wines.  A strong grape, it helps make wines of classic breed, intensity and complexity that often need to bottle-age for at least 5-10 years in order to reach peak flavor condition. The most successful plantings in North America are mainly on Long Island (N.Y.) and the cooler regions of northern California. The vine is quite cold-hardy, although it acclimates slowly and can be injured by cold freezes in December and early January.

Wine Collections
Admirers of wine know that the type of grape from which wines are fermented will in large part determine the basic fruit-flavor characteristics, both aroma and taste, of the final product. As a result, wines of high reputation are often regarded as associated with a single grape variety, often referred to as a "varietal", especially in the english-speaking world.  Admire these selections of a careful pick, not only in quality, but in style, flavour and magnitude.  We know you will enjoy what you find.

Because of this, such grape-names as Cabernet Sauvignon for red Bordeaux, Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc for Sauternes, Pinot Noir for red Burgundy and Chardonnay for white Burgundy, etc., are now embedded in the "wine-speak" language. However these names can be misleading because they imply a precision that in reality is not present.

An example is that there is no such thing as "the" Pinot Noir. In fact accuracy demands that it be referred to as "a" Pinot Noir because the name does not belong to a unique vine species but to what the french grower calls a "cépage", that is, a growth defined as a group of closely related but not quite identical vine species sharing the same genetic background.

Point being, the list of wine varieties can go on and on and on.  The blends of various wine grapes make up a huge percentage of the existing "varieties."  Below is a small list.

Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Merlot Blend, Chianti, Italian Red, Merlot, Nebbiolo, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Red Bordeaux, Red Burgundy, Sangiovese, Syrah, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Italian White, Muscat, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Sake, Sauvignon, Fume Blanc, Semillon, White Bordeaux, White Burgundy...
